Edo Speaker backs Okowa as running mate to Atiku as Delta/Edo young parliamentarians meet in Benin City

Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Marcus Onobun, has extolled the virtues of Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State and threw his weight behind his emergence as the vice presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Rt. Hon Onobun who spoke when the Delta State Youth Parliament visited the Edo State House of Assembly, Benin City on a learning tour also threw his weight behind Okowa’s emergence as the vice presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the 2023 general elections.

He stated that the Edo Assembly was in support of Governor Okowa’s vice presidential bid, saying it was a plus for the entire south-south region as well as the nation.

He congratulated the Governor for his choice as the running mate to the PDP Presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar and called for massive support from the people in the south-south for Okowa who according to him is a worthy ambassador of the region.

Onobun also expressed gratitude for the visit of the Delta State Youth Parliament to the Edo State House of Assembly urging the young parliamentarians to put to good use the knowledge acquired during their study tour.

Deputy Speaker, Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Roland Asoro described the learning visit by the Delta State Youth Parliamentarians as unique and a demonstration of the unity and oneness Delta and Edo States share.

The Deputy Speaker stressed the need for the promotion of more positive ideas that would enhance peace and good governance in Delta and Edo states.

Delta State Commissioner for Youth Development, Comrade Ifeanyi Egwunyenga, in his remarks, said the learning visit to Edo State House of Assembly and Joint Plenary Session of the Delta State Youth Parliament and the Edo State Youth Parliament was part of activities marking the 2022 International Youth Day Celebration.

Egwunyenga restated the commitment of the Delta State government towards youth development and empowerment in the state.

The Commissioner called for a paradigm shift on issues relating to youths, saying that a solid foundation must be laid for a better tomorrow.

He urged the youth of both states and the nation at large to be proactive in their approach to life.

For his part, Edo State Commissioner for Youth Development and Humanitarian Affairs, Mr Christopher Nehikare, expressed optimism for a stronger bond between Delta and states.

The high point of the learning visit was the joint plenary session between the Delta State Youth Parliament and their Edo State counterpart where motions were discussed.

In one of their resolutions, the youth parliamentarians called on the Edo State Government to establish the Edo State Youth Development Fund.

They also called on the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki and his Delta State counterpart, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa to strengthen boundary security in both states.

They also adopted a motion by Hon Joshua Kpakre, representing Udu Constituency in the Delta Youth Parliament, commending the Delta State Governor for graciously approving and releasing funds for the hosting of the joint sitting.

The joint sitting was presided by the Speakers of both Youth Parliament, Dr George Ohwoekevwo and Rt Hon Osawemwenhio Uwagboe.
