President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed his appreciation to the United States for the backing of ex-finance minister and world bank chief, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, for the position of director-general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
Buhari in his appreciation which he posted on his Facebook page on Sunday afternoon, said he looked forward to working with the new US government in the areas of security, economic growth among others.
The US government under Donald Trump had in November 2020 vetoed the popular decision of the WTO council members that backed Okonjo-Iweala’s, as the new DG of the organization.
Buhari’s Facebook post read below:
We welcome the decision of the new U.S administration to remove the last obstacle in the path of Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala to becoming the first female and the first person of African descent to lead the World Trade Organization (WTO).
We look forward to working very closely with the new U.S administration on this and all issues of common interests, especially in such areas as accelerated economic growth, fight against terrorism and deepening progress on development issues.
