Diri secures 2nd term as governor of Bayelsa

Incumbent Governor of Bayelsa State and governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Douye Diri, has been declared the winner of the State governorship election held last Saturday.

The Returning Officer, Prof Faruq Kuta, who is also the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University Of Technology, Minna, announced Diri as the winner of the poll at the collation centre of the election on Monday.

Diri polled 175,196 to defeat his closest rival, Timipre Sylva of the All Progressives Congress, APC, who garnered 110,108 votes while the Labour Party, LP, polled 905 votes.

Meanwhile, Governor Douye Diri has promised to be governor of all Bayelsans irrespective of party affiliations.

He gave the assurance while addressing newsmen in Government House, Yenagoa, the state capital, shortly after he was declared as winner of the state governorship election.

Diri said the people of Bayelsa State were too few to be divided by politics or tribe.

He thanked President Bola Tinubu for allowing a conducive environment for a free, fair and credible poll.

Diri also appreciated the role of the security agencies for their professionalism and hard work in providing security for the exercise and the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, for discharging their responsibility creditably.
