A truck on Wednesday hit a tricycle at PTI Junction in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State leading to the death of a woman and child travelling in the tricycle.

A mob thereafter descended on a police patrol van and set it ablaze.

The NPA Expressway between Effurun Roundabout and P.T.I Junction was soaked in tension for several hours on Wednesday.

It took the intervention of the Army to open the road which was blocked by the angry protesters.

The protesters were believed to have set ablaze a police vehicle sending a chill on passersby.

There were divergent views on what caused the tension that threatened the peace of the metropolis but no one could really confirm what transpired.

What was obvious was that two persons, a baby and a woman were killed in an accident when a truck rammed the tricycle they were travelling in from behind.

Both died instantly but it was not clear what happened to other occupants of the tricycle.

Some people alleged that the accident happened because a police van was chasing a vehicle.

No one could corroborate the story.

But anger became uncontrollable when some policemen came to the scene of the accident to take photographs without an attempt to remove the bodies of the accident victims.

An angry mob reportedly pounced on the policemen accusing them of causing the death of the woman and child and set the retreating van on fire.

It was gathered that the mob took the bodies of the victims to the Ebrumede Police Station angry that for several hours after the accident the officers of the police station which was less than a kilometre away had not removed the corpses.

The Army and officials of Operation Delta Hawk at the scene worked to restore normalcy and re-establish a free flow of traffic.

The Director-General, Security Delta State, David Tonwe debunked the allegation that the security outfit had anything to do in the incident that led to the accident and eventual death of the woman and child.

Meanwhile, fresh information has emerged over the circumstance leading to the accident that caused the death of a woman and child on Wednesday around PTI Junction.

In a video released by the police, one Temitope said he was on his way to hospital when the accident occurred.

He said he was not being chased by the police as widely insinuated by people.
