Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori; Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Dennis Guwor; and the Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, have expressed deep sorrow over the death of Delta Broadcasting Service (DBS), Asaba presenter, Ms Vivian Nkechika, describing her passing as a painful loss to the media industry and the state at large.
Ms Nkechika, an indigene of Ekwuoma in Ika North East Local Government Area, was an Assistant Manager in the Programmes Department of DBS Asaba.
She reportedly passed away on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, following complications arising from a domestic gas explosion.
In a condolence message issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, Governor Oborevwori said the late broadcaster’s death was a devastating blow to the journalism profession and society.
He described her as a diligent, ethical and principled media practitioner whose passion for public education, factual reporting and responsible journalism earned her wide admiration among colleagues and audiences.
“This is a moment of deep sadness. Delta State has lost a vibrant and committed media professional whose voice contributed immensely to informing and enlightening the public,” the Governor said, praying for divine comfort and strength for her family, colleagues and the entire media fraternity.
Similarly, Rt. Hon. Guwor, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Nkem Nwaeke, described Vivian Nkechika’s death as particularly heartbreaking, coming shortly after the demise of another journalist in the state.
He extended condolences to her family, DBS management and staff, the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council, and members of the media fraternity.
Guwor described the late broadcaster as a passionate, hardworking and highly skilled professional who served the public with distinction, noting that the House of Assembly mourns her passing and prays for eternal rest for her soul.
Also condoling, Mr. Aniagwu, said Vivian Nkechika was a consummate broadcaster whose distinctive voice, discipline and commitment to ethical journalism left an indelible mark on broadcasting in Delta State.
He noted that her death came as a rude shock at a time when her experience and mentorship were still greatly needed in the media space.
Aniagwu urged media practitioners to sustain the legacy of professionalism, integrity and excellence that the late broadcaster stood for, adding that although she is gone, her contributions to journalism in Delta State would remain evergreen.
All three leaders commiserated with the management and staff of DBS Asaba, the NUJ, friends and associates of the deceased, praying God to grant them the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss and to grant the soul of Vivian Nkechika eternal rest.
