A political pressure group known as Delta Collective Assembly, DCA, has lent a strong voice to the need for strict adherence to the existing power rotation of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for the governorship seat in the state.

The position of the group comes as some staunch leaders of the party of the Ijaw extraction from Delta South Senatorial District are alleged to have started making moves to contest for the governorship seat of the state come 2023; when it is supposed to be the turn of the Urhobos from Delta Central.

Recall that Chief James Ibori of the PDP from Delta Central was governor of the state from 1999 to 2007, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan from Delta South held sway as governor from 2007 to 2015 while Dr Ifeanyi Okowa from Delta North, who emerged as governor in 2015 and is in his second term will exit power in 2023, when the zoning arrangement by the party is supposed to start all over from Delta Central.

Rising from its inaugural meeting on Wednesday in Ughelli, the group in a communique said that, “the existing clockwise rotation of the office of governor of Delta State for PDP among the three senatorial districts is not negotiable and therefore be sustained”.

The communique was signed by Hon Joseph Orogun (Delta South), Chief Vincent Otidi (Delta Central) and Chief Alfred Onyenwosa (Delta North).

The DCA whose members are also of the PDP from across the twenty-five(25) local government areas of Delta State noted that “The practice of zoning and rotation of this governorship has continued to promote peace, fairness, unity and a sense of belonging among the three senatorial districts in Delta State.

“The practice of this clockwise rotation has facilitated or eased the victories of the PDP in all governorship elections from 1999-2019 in Delta State”.

The DCA affirmed its resolve to the realisation of the PDP governorship zoning arrangement in Delta State which conforms with the party’s constitution as enshrined in Article 7 paragraph 3 as amended 2017.
