Assistant Inspector of Prison, Apiakise Samson has been arrested for allegedly raping a 15-year-old girl (name withheld) in Warri, Delta State.
DAILY POST reports that the suspect was arrested by men of the Nigeria Police Force “B” Division in Warri, and has been cooling off his heels at the Police station.
This is coming as the Divisional Police Officer, DPO “B”, CSP Christopher Odoh rejected a five million naira bribe (#5million) presented to him by some unidentified persons for him to sweep the matter under the carpet.
However, the DPO insisted that justice must be done in the matter to serve as a deterrent to others hiding under uniforms to perpetrate crimes.
The rape and defilement incident occurred on January 21 at Obahor Street in Warri, DAILY POST can report.
It was learnt that the suspect on the 21st of January at about 11pm accosted the young girl, forcefully took her into the Correctional Centre, beat her up, pulled off her clothes, laid her on the ground and had carnal knowledge of her without her consent.
He allowed the girl to go back home the following morning at about 5am.
When the girl, a JSS III student of Ugbuwangue College, Warri, got home, she reported the matter to her mother who had looked for her throughout the night.
Angered by the development, the mother of the girl incidented the matter at the Police Station “B” Division.
The suspect was promptly arrested as a medical examination was conducted by Dr. A. Akpofure of the Central Hospital, Warri and the report indicated that there was penetration and blood stains.
When Our Correspondent called the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe for comments on the matter, he said, “He had not gotten any report from the DPO. He also promised to get back to Our Correspondent as soon as he gets any information from the DPO.
When contacted for comments, Secretary to the Comptroller of Nigeria Correction Centre in Delta State, Festus Onyeaju on Monday, January 27 in a telephone chat with Our Correspondent said, “I can’t speak on that. Am not in Warri.”
It was also gathered that the suspect as of Tuesday, January 28 is currently undergoing trial by officials of the Nigerian Correctional Services, NCS, who came into Warri from Asaba.
The suspect who faces dismissal will be arraigned in court immediately as soon as the trial is concluded.
