The Delta State Police Command on Wednesday said it has arrested five suspects in connection with the killing of one Abowa Osawe, by four suspected cultists on Shell road in Sapele, Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State.
A statement by the Acting Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Edafe Bright, said the Sapele Divisional Police Officer, CSP Harrison Nwabuisi hearing of the killing on Tuesday, quickly mobilised his men to the scene and arrested five suspects in connection with the murder.
The Police Spokesperson in the statement said the interrogation and confessional statement of the suspects led to the arrest of one Andrew ‘m’ AKA Pounds, who has been a notorious cultist terrorizing Sapele.
According to the statement, yellow cult regalia, one locally-made pistol and two cartridges were recovered from him with the vehicle used in the dastardly act, one Toyota Camry red in colour with reg no AAA409 GL also recovered.
Edafe in the statement said the suspect confessed to being a member of Aiye cult adding that investigation is in progress on the matter.
Also on Tuesday in Udu Local Government Area, Edafe said the Divisional Police Officer of Ovwian-Aladja Division, acting on a tip-off that four armed men were robbing road users along Ovwian Express Junction on Udu road, immediately mobilized a patrol team in conjunction with local vigilante to the scene.
According to him, the hoodlums on sighting the patrol team opened fire on the team and in return the team gun down one of the hoodlums while others escaped.
He said one locally made double barrel pistol with two cartridges were recovered while a manhunt for the other suspects is ongoing.
On further breakthroughs in combating crimes in Udu and Warri South Local Government Areas, Edafe said, “On the 17/3/2021, acting on a distress call from one of the occupants of a building in Urhukpe Oghene Layout, along Jigbale market, two armed men were in the compound trying to break in and rob the occupants of the house, the Divisional Police Officer Ovwian Aladja Division Sp Samuel Yohanna Kwabe, quickly mobilized patrol teams to the scene, the criminals on sighting the police took to their heels, they were given a hot chase, in the process, they abandon one locally made pistol with two live cartridges which was recovered. Manhunt for the fleeing suspects is ongoing.
“On the 16/3/2021 at about 1845hrs, a police patrol team attached to ‘A’ Division Warri raided a black spot at Ubeji community.
“A buildup on earlier recognisance made where the suspect was captured on under-covered videotape are comfortably selling suspected weeds believed to be cannabis Sativa.
“Considering the aggressive and violent nature and resistance of the community youths against police effecting arrest, a formidable operational plan was drawn by the divisional police officer CSP T.Y Mahmud and identified spot mark and stormed in a record time despite the community youths resistance and attack on police through sporadic gunshots and pelting of stones.
“Policemen through courage and resilience were able to arrest one Monday Akpako ‘m’ who is the principal suspect and has confessed to being a major dealer in cannabis. Investigation is ongoing,” the Delta Police PPRO said in the statement.
