Mr Lucky Peter, the suspect accused of abducting a child from the residence of Mr and Mrs Favour on Oveto Street in Ughelli North Local Government Area, has been formally arraigned before a Magistrate Court in Ofuoma town.
The arraignment, which took place on Friday, June 13, marks a significant step in the ongoing legal process aimed at addressing rising incidents of child abduction in the area. During the court session, the charges were formally read to the defendant.
The chairman of Ughelli North Local Government, Olorogun Jaro Egbo, was present at the hearing.
Addressing journalists outside the courtroom, he reiterated the council’s resolve to uphold justice and protect the children’s rights
“I am here today to fulfil the promise I made—to ensure we follow every legal and logical path in seeking justice for victims of child abduction. Our administration is one of law, order, and compassion.
“We will not relent until justice is served, and let this serve as a deterrent to anyone planning to infringe upon the rights and safety of our children,” he stated.
The prosecuting counsel, Mr. S.O. Egedegbe, confirmed that bail had been granted to the defendant under stringent conditions.
According to him, the bail is set at ₦5 million, with a requirement for a Level 16 civil servant to stand as surety. The suspect will remain in custody until these conditions are met.
The matter has been adjourned to July 15, 2025, for further hearing.
As the legal process unfolds, the people of Ughelli North watch closely, hopeful that justice will be served in a case that underscores the urgent need for vigilance and stronger measures to combat child abduction.
