There was pandemonium on Sunday night (January 24, 2021) as unknown gunmen reportedly attacked a military checkpoint in Otonyasere community in Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State leaving one army officer dead.
The gunmen were said to have made away with the gun of the deceased army officer.
It was gathered that the gunmen came through the riverside in Otonyasere community to carry out a kidnapping operation but needed to disarm the army at the checkpoint before they can carry out their mission since that is the only entry and exit point from the community through the riverside.
It was learnt that a policeman was also among those allegedly shot dead though NewsNet was yet to independently verify the information as at the time of filing this report.
Further investigation revealed that it was a gun battle between the army and the gunmen that resulted in the death of the army officer.
A security source who spoke to one of our correspondents in confidence, while confirming the reported attack said: ”Yes there was an attack, one army has been confirmed dead, but the situation is still not very clear.”
Meanwhile, fear is reported to have gripped members of the community over possible military onslaught following the massive deployment of men of 19 Battalion, Nigerian Army, Koko to the community this night(Sunday).
