Daredevil armed men on Thursday ambushed policemen on UBA Special Escort from Warri to Asaba along Otor-Owhe on the Ughelli-Asaba dual carriageway of Delta State.

It is however still unclear if the armed men carted away money from the bullion van as according to a dependable source who craved anonymity, the van which was being driven to Asaba was empty.

The source told NewsNet Nigeria that the money that was made away by the hoodlums if any were ‘condemned money’ which were being taken to the Central Bank in Asaba.

Meanwhile, the Delta State Police Command in a statement by the Command’s spokesman, DSP Bright Edafe, on Thursday evening said, the policemen were on their way to transport cash from Asaba to Warri when they were ambushed by the gunmen.

According to the statement, the heavily armed hoodlums numbering about ten in two Sienna vehicles engaged the policemen in a gun duel following which one policeman and the driver of the bullion van they were escorting were injured.

“However, no life was lost but some of the hoodlums were fatally injured and were taken away by their gang members while the Bullion Van was recovered and taken to the Police station.

“Further development will be communicated. Meanwhile, the incident is currently being investigated while a manhunt for the hoodlums is ongoing,” said the statement.
