The chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has warned Local Government chairmen across Nigeria that the antigraft agency would not wait till their tenure elapses before coming after them over corrupt and fraudulent activities.
Olukoyede issued the stern warning on Wednesday while speaking at the Gombe State LG Summit.
The EFCC boss emphasised that the council chairmen are not immune from investigation and prosecution for fraudulent activities.
“Local government chairmen do not have immunity, and we are not going to wait until you finish your tenure to come after you,” Olukoyede said.
He also lamented that the people are not feeling the impact of local government resources, and instead of driving growth, councils have become mere caricatures.
To address this issue, Olukoyede advised chairpersons to establish a compliance unit to monitor resource usage and project delivery.
The EFCC has also set up a Fraud Risk Assessment and Control (FRAC) department to track the use of increased funds from the federation account.
Olukoyede concluded with a clear warning: “EFCC will be paying you visits occasionally to monitor how you are using the funds. We will come in the evening. Sometimes you may even be seeing us in your dreams.”
