A Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Asaba, Delta State has remanded Inspector Ubi Ebri at the Ogwashi-Uku Correctional Center for killing Onyeka Ibe, a phone seller at the popular Ogbeogonogo in Asaba.
Inspector Ebri attached to the Area Command patrol team was arraigned in court for unlawfully killing Onyeka Ibe by shooting him with a gun on Wednesday, April 5, 2023, while on stop-and-search duty along Ugbolu-Illah road, Asaba, for refusing to give a bribe of N100.
Before his arraignment at the court on Wednesday Inspector Ebri was dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force after the conclusion of the orderly room trial at the headquarters of the Delta State Police Command in Asaba.
The court ordered that the suspect be remanded at the Ogwashi-Uku Correctional Center while the case file be sent to the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for legal advice and prosecution of the suspect by the office of the DPP.
The spokesperson for the Delta State Police Command, DSP Bright Edafe, in a statement, said, “The Command has tasked officers and men to uphold the tenets of professional policing in the discharge of their duties with respect to the fundamental human rights of all citizens in line with the provisions of the 1999 constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria (as amended) while hoping that this will serve as a deterrent to others officers.”
