COMTOA begins daily collection of levies from motorcycle, tricycle riders in Delta, assures of better deal

With Tuesday’s commencement of the sales of tickets to Keke and Okada operators in Delta State under the auspices of the Commercial Motorcycle and Tricycle Operators Association (COMTOA), the riders have said the new rates do not reflect the realities of the economy.

They have therefore asked for a downward review but the COMOTOA says the operators have a better deal and have promised to be more proactive in protecting them.

COMTOA is the only recognized body authorised by the Delta State Government to manage and collect Daily Road Tax from operators.

Operators of tricycles and motorcycles in Warri and Udu metropolises have complained about the resumption of road tax ticket sales on them this new year.

They complained that they heaved a sigh of relief when it was halted in the first quarter of 2023 during the period of the general elections and did not expect the road tax would be reintroduced.

The tricycle and motorcycle operators said that they cannot afford to pay 300 naira and 200 naira respectively daily, especially with the increase in petrol price due to fuel subsidy removal.

One of the drivers said he was yet to receive any benefit from what they refer to as welfare ticket purchasing over the years.

He added that they also called for the streamlining of the sales to avoid multiple taxation.

Reacting to operators’ complaints, the State Treasure COMTOA, Comrade Okeoghene Kingsley Miller said the price of the ticket is a reflection of the removal of fuel subsidy as it affects every aspect of the economy.

He said plans are on ground for a health insurance and welfare scheme for the operators by the Association.

Mr Miller added that the road tax ticket is also expected to help cover road and security maintenance to ensure the safety of riders and passengers.

He said to check imposters modalities have been put in place such as uniforms and I.D cards as a means of identification along with caretaker committee to checkmate the perceived excesses of the officials

Kingsley Miller however appealed to all members of the Association to co-operate and imbibe the rules and regulations of the Association.

He gave an assurance that the present administration of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori is ready and willing to do more for the benefit of all.
