Nigeria’s former President, Muhammadu Buhari, has died at the age of 82 while receiving treatment at a clinic in London, United Kingdom.
The news of his passing was confirmed on Sunday by his former spokesperson, Garba Shehu, in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter).
“The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin,” Shehu wrote.
Sources close to the family disclosed that Buhari had recently been discharged from intensive care after falling ill during a routine medical trip abroad.
Though the nature of his illness was never publicly revealed, his condition reportedly deteriorated in recent weeks.
A former military ruler from 1983 to 1985, Buhari made a historic return to power as a civilian in 2015.
His administration, which ended in 2023 after two terms, was marked by a vigorous anti-corruption drive, major economic reforms, and a protracted battle against insecurity, particularly in northern Nigeria.
