The Delta State Police Command has arrested 25-year-old Godwin Mngumi, the principal suspect in the brutal murder of retired Justice Ifeoma Okogwu, weeks after he was declared wanted and a manhunt was launched for his capture.
In a statement issued Sunday, December 7, 2025, by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, operatives of the State CID Homicide Section, acting on intelligence, apprehended Mngumi on December 6, 2025, and recovered the mobile phone of the late jurist from his possession.
During interrogation, Mngumi reportedly confessed to orchestrating the murder and admitted that he invited his friend, Nnaji Obalum, and another accomplice, currently on the run, to the victim’s residence, where they collectively carried out the killing.
Nnaji Obalum has since been arrested, while a manhunt remains ongoing for the third suspect.
This arrest follows the Police Command’s earlier announcement after the retired judge was found dead inside her Asaba home on November 24, 2025, with her hands, legs and mouth tied, after her brother raised an alarm.
At the time, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, ordered the transfer of the case to the State CID, sparking intensified investigations that have now led to the arrest of the principal suspect, who was initially declared at large.
The Command reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring that all those involved face justice and urged members of the public with helpful information on the fleeing suspect to contact the police through the emergency lines: 08036684974, 08114895600 and 08025666914.
