The Ogun State Police Command has arraigned the driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the fatal road crash that claimed the lives of two associates of heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua.
The defendant, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 46, was brought before a Magistrate Court sitting in Sagamu, Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun State, on Friday, January 2, 2026.
Confirming the arraignment, the Police disclosed that Kayode was formally charged in connection with the accident that occurred along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
In a statement, the Police said: “The driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the Anthony Joshua accident case, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode (male), aged 46, was charged at the Sagamu Magistrate Court today, 2nd January, 2026.”
According to the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, the defendant is facing four criminal counts bordering on dangerous and negligent driving.
The charges include dangerous driving causing death, contrary to Section 5(1) of the Federal Highway Act, Cap F:135, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, as applicable in Ogun State.
He was also charged with reckless and negligent driving under Section 6(1); driving without due care and attention causing bodily harm and damage to property under Section 7(1); and driving without a valid National Driver’s Licence, contrary to Section 10(1) of the same Act.
The Magistrate Court granted the defendant bail in the sum of ₦5 million with two sureties, but ordered that he be remanded in custody pending the fulfilment of the bail conditions.
The crash occurred on Monday while the driver was conveying Anthony Joshua and two of his friends, Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, along the busy expressway.
The Lexus SUV reportedly rammed into a stationary truck, resulting in the instant deaths of Ayodele and Ghami. Joshua and the driver sustained minor injuries.
Joshua was discharged from hospital late Wednesday after doctors certified him clinically fit to continue his recovery at home.
Sources disclosed that the former world heavyweight champion, accompanied by his mother, later visited a Lagos funeral home to pay final respects to the deceased, whose remains were being prepared for repatriation abroad.
